3rd time lucky!

Hello :)

So lately I have been busy, meeting so many new people and going new places. I have also been abit sick lately but that hasn't stopped me much!
On thursday I was at home sick, but I managed to catch the bus into the city to meet my second host dad who was picking me up to take me to the first, of many, rotary meetings. The meeting was good, and I met heaps of rotarians! It was a little boring because they were all talking in danish, but I just have to get use to that before I learn the language. I met my Club President and gave him an Australian desk flag, big flag and I gave everyone a pin of a kangaroo!

My host parents also took me, and another exchange student Jeramy, to meet the Mayor of the town I live in. She was very nice and gave us a tour of the building, and it was big! She showed us things like where all the different parts of government work, and where all the primary schools get their internet from and many more interesting facts and places. After the tour we got a photo with her and she gave both Jeramy and I a present, which was a little key ring of something I'm not too sure of, but it was nice.

Last Saturday was Australia Day (and I was also celebrating the anniversary of me being in Denmark for 1 week) and I went all out! The whole day I tried to sound as "Aussie" as I can and it kinda worked. I also invited some new friends over for an Australian dinner which meant we all helped cook Hamburgers, Pavlova and Lamingtons! My host brother Asbjørn and his best friend Jacob did the decorations, and they did a pretty good job! There were Australian flags everywhere, maps a really big Australian flag hanging up and other bit and bops everywhere. It was a very relaxing night and  then some slept over which was awesome! I have to admit, it felt abit weird calling it Australia Day because it was snowing outside the whole night and freezing, but nonetheless it was great!

School is pretty good, just very boring at times as you could imagine. My first day was good but just very daunting being in a new school with no danish. I got given a buddy and she is still one of my good friends in school :) Exchange students always talk about how it's hard to make friends in the first few weeks but my first day a girl in my class named Molly introduced herself and then invited me to a party she is having, and I don't know if she knew but that made making friends a whole lot easier (so thanks!)
As I said before, it's hard in class sometimes because I never have an idea of what is happening but my friends help alot :) My Favourite class at the moment is English, only because it is the only class where i'm not bored watching movie, talking on Facebook to people in Australia trying to sleep or reading, but I can actually talk to my friends and help them. I am finding it very easy but it's good because it gives me a chance to help them and they help me with danish at the same time.

On sunday I had the best day with my Asbjørn and Jacob again playing in the snow! We made snowmen, snow angels and had a snow fight. I felt like such a kid but it was such a great experience!

I have had a good few days and I hope to write more often so they won't be as long!!
Bye for now

20th January 2013

2nd entry..

As I am starting to write this blog I am sitting in a warm room; in my new house; in Horsens; in Denmark with alot of snow outside!

The past few days have been very crazy for me. I went from 45 degrees to -5 in one day and to add to that I said goodbye to my family for a year, sat on a plane for 25 hours and moved to another country. The past few days have been great - hard but great! After I got off the plane and found my bags I was greeted at the airport by 3 of my 4 host families, my councillor  and my club president. It was very cute because they were all standing there with either Danish flags or Australian flags and were waving them around just for me.

Then, after a whole lot of introductions, we all drove back to my first house for a big Danish meal. As soon as I got there Inge (my host mum) wanted me to Skype my parents and show the house to them. It was great to Skype with them even though it wasn't for very long! Also at lunch I met a girl from Germany who is living here for 6 months and her name is Flora. I found out that I am going to be in all the same classes as her and she lives very close to me. After everyone had gone I unpacked my bags and made my room more 'me'. Inge organised two other people from my school to drop round and meet me and help me get ready for starting school on Monday.

Later in the night we went out for dinner and then came home and relaxed which was really nice after such a big day.

Today has also been very busy! This morning Inge and I walked through the snow to the morning service at the nearby church. It was a really old and beautiful church and a nice service - even though it was all in Danish! I also went into Horsens to the one shop that is open on Sundays then on the way home Inge took me on abit of a tour around Horsens. I drove past my school, two other host families homes I will stay in later in the year, the language school I will attend Monday afternoons straight after school and the beach which I was warned not to swim at right now as I will die because it's so cold!

I have also tried some interesting foods already including Denmark's famous hotdog and Sild (Herring) on Rye Bread with onion and curry salad. I can't say I enjoyed it a lot, but I can say I tried it!

I can now say a couple of introductory sentences but I'm not so sure of the spelling so you will have to wait abit before you can read all my awesome Danish skills! Tomorrow I start school as well as my first class at Language School in the afternoon.

This is a photo from the window of the plane, flying over Denmark - so much snow!
This photo was taken just after we got off the plane in Copenhagen, before we had to get on another plane. First of many photos with snow :)
This is the Sild (herring) I ate.
Another photo of me + snow. I can't believe I went out in the snow in just a shirt and jacket! - my guess... Excited!
This is my new school, covered in snow! I'll be spending quite alot of time here, so I hope it's warm inside!

Wish me luck,

Beth :)

Almost liftoff: 2 days, 23 hours

1st of many..

So it's less then 3 days till I have to sit on a plane for 25 hours! I can't believe that after months of camps, planning and packing that in 3 days I will be 'living' in Denmark :)
I won't be writing on here everyday but I will write here often enough so that you will be able to know all the exciting things I will be doing and amazing places I will be seeing! So, about me:
My name is Bethany, but I prefer Beth! I'm going on Exchange to Horsens, Denmark, through Rotary. My club is West Pennant Hills/Cherrybrook Rotary Club. There are 19 teenagers leaving from my District and I am fortunate enough to be one of them! It is going to be 30 hours in total to get from my house to my first house in Denmark.
I am so excited for this big adventure and I can't wait to share with you all more once this trip gets on its way!

Bye for now,

Beth :)
